You feel that you really want to stop smoking but something is holding you back. Smoking is related to fears and worrying about health, but we do not talk about fears of quitting. Many smokers have various reasons to smoke, but the main reason for not wanting to give it up stems from two main reasons: fear of anxiety and fear of gaining weight.

Most smokers find smoking relaxing. They falsely believe that smoking relieves tension. You might think that smoking is calming your nerves and it helps deal with feelings of anxiety. The truth is, that it is the nicotine itself that can cause anxiety symptoms or make them worse. 

The other very common fear is worrying about putting on weight after quitting smoking.

Well, smoking speeds up your metabolism, so even if you eat the same amount as before, you might put a bit of weight on. It also reduces your appetite, so when you quit, you feel hungrier. When you give up smoking, all your taste buds become free from nicotine, they are not “covered” any more, so you enjoy your food more. Also, as most people use smoking as a relaxation, some replace smoking with eating. So, yes, weight gain might happen; however, you can put a plan in action to avoid putting on too much weight.

The best way is starting an exercise routine. It does not mean hitting the gym every day but finding something that you really enjoy.

If you order your food in advance and make a conscious, healthy choice of food, there is nothing to reach for when you have cravings. Make sure you shop for healthy snack alternatives that you can munch on when you feel anxious (I find carrots are the best because they take a while to eat them). Some people find chewing gum a good alternative for smoking. Don`t starve yourself, eat small portions often. Try to increase your sleep, “sleep yourself slim”. Water helps you the most. The more water you drink, the less hungry you are (and it also helps your metabolism).

These are just ideas for you to put in a plan before quitting smoking, so you can feel fully prepared and not anxious about life without cigarettes. After all, you are becoming a healthy, self-conscious, new person!

Don`t forget, nicotine affects your body many ways, all of them are negative.

And there are many benefits of living a non-smoker lifestyle.

Your lungs and heart will be stronger, your skin will look younger, your teeth will be whiter, you will have a fresh breath, you and your clothes will smell better, you will have more energy, your mood will change for the better, you will physically perform better and, don`t forget, you can save a lot of money.

So, if you really want to quit smoking, there is nothing to stop you.
