Are you not looking forward to Christmas?
That`s okay. You are not alone in feeling like this.
Some people are stressed about Christmas, shopping, cooking, entertaining, or simply participating in social events, whilst others dread being alone while everyone is celebrating with their loved ones. They might feel alone or left out because everyone else seems happy. Some might feel frustrated by others’ ‘perfect’ Christmas if these feel different from their experiences.
Some might face loneliness, listening to other people’s exciting plans, making them feel like aliens for not having all those beautiful relationships.
How to enjoy Christmas alone
1. Do the things you enjoy doing alone! Binge-watch movies, walk, do a puzzle, have a long bath, and make a list in advance of things that make you happy.
2. Get on social media; there will be others hanging there, feeling alone
3. However, if social media (Christmas family photos) bother you, turn your phone off and do something you enjoy.
4. You don’t have to celebrate; you can use the time to relax and focus on yourself.
5. Find some volunteering opportunities. Most charities need more staff at this time of the year.
6. Sort something out in your house; clean a cupboard, drawer, or whole house if you wish. Feeling productive distracts your thoughts.
7. Set some challenges for next year and work out the steps to reach them. There is no better time to plan your life when you are undisturbed.
8. Read, listen to music, dance around, eat what you like, stay in pyjamas… there are so many people out there who wish they had your life.
